HARWOOD GOLF CLUB
MAY 2012 NEWSLETTER
Some of you will remember “Pin High, a magazine produced by an editorial group of members, which came out initially four times year and then latterly on a once a year basis before finally closing.
We aim to produce a monthly “newsletter” keeping members informed of forthcoming events, both social and competitive, updates from the various sub-committees and other groups within the Club, plus any other information which we feel may interest members.
This being the first attempt, may seem a little long, but please bear with us!
Message from our Captain, Mr. David Johnston.
The Lady Captain, Junior Captain and I would like to thank all those that came to support the Drive In. We were fortunate in having good weather for both days and we all managed to get our “drives” around the green. The Vice Captain and Lady Captain Elect were winners of the Ann Leece Trophy.
Let us hope it continues for the rest of the year. (I presume David means the good weather!!)
Harwood Men’s Team
The season got underway with the Manchester Alliance knockouts:

In the Dunham Forest Trophy we were drawn away against Greenmount Golf Club on a very cold and wet Bank Holiday Monday under very bad conditions the team came out on top 4½ – 2½ thanks to wins for Adrian Rodgers, Anthony Stirling, Joe Donnelly & Neil Stirling with Karl Bowker getting a half on the 18th
In the First Round of the Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes we were fortunate enough to get a bye.
Thanks go to all Members who came to support the teams.

Bar and Catering.
I remind myself on a daily basis that the hub of the club - outside of the course - is the clubhouse and the function of the bar and catering chairman is to ensure that members feel comfortable and welcome in the surroundings and are given the best possible quality price and range from the bar and from the Kitchen.
To this end, we decided last year to allow the bar to be run as a commercial enterprise by the current caterer John Reid.
After a settling in period for John and for the members we are now at a stage where I believe we are starting to reap the benefits.
The bar is offering a good range of Beer and spirits at probably the most competitive prices in the area and John has recently extended his range of wines on offer by the glass, small bottle and full bottle. The bar is also open more than it used to be and looks a lot more welcoming than it has done in the past.
With regard to the catering side. John has produced a new standard menu (see below) which will be available at any time and is not only extensive but very reasonably priced. I think that this will be taken up by the members over the next few months and we will see more and more people eating in the clubhouse as a matter of course.
Finally, after a great deal of deliberation, the ban on smart casual jeans in the clubhouse has been lifted. We do not expect to see (and of course will not tolerate) ripped and dirty blue denims in the lounge but the smart casual jeans which are fashionable will be allowed. We think that this will add to the relaxed and informal "Feel" of the club house.
We are trialing this until June to see the result but have been encouraged by the experiences of other clubs where the feedback has been positive. John and his staff will be supervising this during this period.
I hope that this gives you a flavour of what is going on with this area of the club. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please feel free to email me at

HARWOOD GOLF CLUB LADIES SECTION
On Sunday 15th April the Ladies Section held a taster day for local women to come and try their hand at golf and to see what it is like to be a member of a club. Alongside Lady Members, Adrian Rodgers provided basic tuition for the visitors from putting to chipping followed by light refreshments and an opportunity for the visitors to chat with current members. The day was a great success and the response from the ladies was very positive. As a result we have had five new temporary lady members who have taken up a two month trial membership. It is now our responsibility to nurture these Ladies to remain at Harwood. This day would not have been possible without dedicated Lady Members of Harwood assisting both prior and on the day and thanks goes to them.
The ‘Early Morning’ Rollup Group
The Rollup Group was originally conceived as a few retired gentlemen golfers who met on a regular basis to play golf and then enjoy a beer and ‘put the world to right’ after their game. It has evolved somewhat since those early days.
Nowadays the Rollup Group comprises over 50 members but it is unusual to get large numbers of us together for our golf sessions, we usually average 12 or so at each session (the most we have ever had at once is 20). Our original objectives are paramount. We still meet to enjoy our regular rounds of golf and have a beer and a chat afterwards. We play friendly, competitive golf and everyone chips in with an ‘entrance fee’, with the eventual winner taking the ‘pot’.
Along the way we have developed our own and unique ‘taxation’ system of the ‘winner’s pot’ to help finance other objectives. These include
Each year we normally donate about £500 to help the Golf Club with a number of projects. Examples include:-
For the last few years we have organised day trips to play golf at Chirk Golf Club near Wrexham and we have never failed to enjoy the trip. This year we are planning an additional trip to Rhos-on-Sea in North Wales.
New members to the Rollup Group are being added all the time. If you feel that you would like to join us then contact Dave Rutter at the clubhouse.

2012 BARFLIES
Many of you will have seen the notices regarding the financial contribution made during 2011 by the Barflies. This group, formed in the early 70s composed of friends who enjoyed the social atmosphere of the Club and who decided amongst themselves to raise funds to be spent within the confines of the Clubhouse. The present, well structured group perform the same function; £2077.22 was spent last year in providing prizes, refurbishment of the furniture, the purchase and fitting of the dance floor and finally, the purchase of a new microphone.
A big thank-you to all involved.
SIMPLE GOLF ETIQUETTE
1. SLOW PLAY IS THE BANE OF GOLF
Always make sure you are half a hole behind the group in front and half a hole in front of the group behind. If there is a gap of more than half a hole in front of your group then you are out of position and MUST speed up play to catch up. If you are looking for a lost ball allow the group behind TO PLAY THROUGH.
2. ALWAYS CALL THROUGH FASTER MOVING GROUPS
You will become very unpopular if you hold play up. Priority on the course is determined by a groups “PACE OF PLAY”
3. DO YOU NEED TO PUTT OUT EVERY TIME?
If you are “out” of a hole it is common practice to pick your ball up until the next hole.
4. ALWAYS REPLACE DIVOTS ON THE FAIRWAY
Leave divots on the tees but use the soil mixture provided in the tee boxes to fill in these divots.
5. ALWAYS REPAIR YOUR PITCHMARK ON THE GREEN AND APRON
Repair them before you putt out without slowing up play. Try to repair your pitch mark and “one more”. A pitch mark repaired immediately will heal quicker than one left a few days. Pitch mark repair tools are sold in our Pro. Shop.
